Abstract

The erosive force of rivers shapes the landscape, thus leading to disputes over the rights to alluvial land. The goal of this article is to show what legal solutions were available in this type of legal dispute, by analyzing on the one hand what the land surveyors Frontinus, Agenn(i)us Urbicus, Hyginus and Siculus Flaccus have to say on the matter, as being more involved in day-to-day practice, and on the other hand what we can learn from classical jurisprudence, whose formulationswere of a more normative character.
